The Art of Underground Racing
This past weekend, I had the opportunity to go out to North Carolina with some folks at Mobil 1 for a weekend filled with automotive insanity. We made a stop to a very famous shop on the outskirts of Charlotte, Underground Racing. It's a shop that houses hundreds of thousands of horses under its roof and is an automotive fan boy's wet dream.

Lambo Lords of the Underground
Like, how stealth can you be when two of the over-the-top, twin-turbo Lamborghini Gallardos you’ve built for your customers practically own the Texas Mile standing-mile shootout? (Longtime customer Kyle Bennett did 241 mph last summer and Richard Holt’s lighter Superleggera killed the two-fifty mark this past March.)

During the second week of December the team at Underground Racing had the privilege of inviting Izod IndyCar Series driver Graham Rahal to test his hands on the wheel of a 1,000+ hp Underground Racing built Twin Turbo Gallardo LP560-4. Auto Week writer Mac Morrison and photographer Rick Dole were on call to capture the exciting moment.

"With the best of the best in attendance, Underground Racing unveiled their newest and most powerful build to date: a beautiful 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo Nera that I christened the "Knight in Shining Armor" and capable of being tuned to 1400 hp! The Underground Racing team started her up and did a few passes on the runway to get the feel of the road. From a spectator’s perspective, it was an outrageous slingshot. Never before in my life, have I seen or heard a Lamborghini run like the Gallardo Nera. It was astonishing to say the least."

"Welcome to the world of Kevin and KC Howeth, masterminds behind Charlotte, North Carolina-based Underground Racing. The brothers have simply perfected the art of extracting humongous amounts of horsepower from Lamborghini's V-10. And delivering a custom-built, trouble-free package that's the closest thing to a street-legal dragster."

Catch another exciting episode of Dream Car Garage for the segment featuring Underground Racing. Watch as KC Howeth assists Legendary Motor Car build a 1,000 horsepower twin-turbo powerplant for a Chip Foose designed Super Cuda. This incredible car is put to the test at the Chrysler Proving Grounds in a later episode and hits a top speed of 208 mph. Check you local listing starting June 1st for Episode 11.

"Weaver began the project by shipping his Dodge to Underground Racing in Charlotte, NC. Underground Racing, a shop well versed in producing forced induction Vipers, tackled the task at hand by pulling the pushrod V-10 engine and disassembling it to its seams. A custom offset ground crankshaft was installed along with CP Pistons, billet main caps, Oliver connecting rods and Hellfire piston rings. Following all the internal work, the Viper's already monstrous displacement was increased from a huge 8.0L to an even more massive 8.4L."
